Once we arrived in Zermatt we could decide what we wanted to do. A few of us had raclette for lunch - rumour has it that this comes from Switzerland. The streets were lined with tourists - it was festival time - we saw skiers/snowboarders walking the streets with their gear obviously finished with their time spent on the glaciers. There was snow on the peaks but we couldn't actually see the skiers. We talked to 4 cyclists from the Netherlands who had stopped for lunch. They had driven from Holland and were spending 2 days cycling in the mountains of Switzerland. Some of the group decided to take a different train right up to Gornergrat which was a 30 minute trip further up the mountain. This is Anna’s journal entry that I am typing from..at Gornergrat we viewed a 360 degree panorama of the huge mountains and glaciers. From here we could also view the Matterhorn, a world famous peak, which was beginning to get fogged in as we got closer so the pictures we got of it are from miles away on the train to Zermatt.
The scenery today was awesome as we went over high gorges, alongside rocky cliffs until we got way about the tree line. What a majestic view – what an awesome Creator we have – large mountains with the glaciers, glacial streams, picturesque rolling hills - all green, little towns with “gezellig” flowers on every balcony – just an array of beauty. We saw the big horned mountain goats (sheep) and also hairy marmots above the tree line. On our return we also saw four deer in the pasture between wooded areas. It was a long day but very rewarding and worthwhile. It was a perfect day to be a tourist in Switzerland. Supper was waiting for us when we got to the Badus Hotel at 7:30. It was a rest day for the cyclists and they were thankful for that especially after yesterday’s hard climb.
