Day 10 - Echternach-Idar Oberstein - Sept. 3

Breakfast is at 8:00 - another “broodbuffet” – what we wouldn’t give for a bacon and egg breakfast once – I don’t think we will see that in Europe. It’s mostly “broodbuffet” for lunch again so we get our share of carbs which for the cyclists is probably alright.

The cyclists are ready to go at 9:00 – it’s only 110 kilometers today so they are thinking, good, we’ll be there a lot earlier than yesterday. Ten kilometers from the hostel we pass into Germany already. We take a bike path along the river through beautiful countryside. Once we leave the bike path we are in for a rude surprise – it’s more uphill and it doesn’t let up. I know there are downhills for each uphill but that doesn’t make it any easier when you are trying your hardest to get up the hill. It was a tough go for the cyclists – by the time the van reached the hostel, all the lady cyclists and their bikes were in the van. We reached the outskirts of Ider Oberstein and it had been downhill for quite a ways and then the fun began – wouldn’t you know it, the hostel was uphill again and a very steep hill at that and again it was after 6:30 p.m. when we arrived at our destination. We had phoned ahead to ask how late we could eat supper and they said 7:00 so needless to say the cyclists ate supper before having time to shower. The cold beer sure tasted good tonight! Supper tonight included red cabbage – what a treat – we could smell it as we came in the door. It came with potatoes, meatloaf, salad and dessert. Didn’t take us long to devour it. By the time supper is finished, showers taken, some laundry done by hand, it’s time to call it a night.

I should mention that the scenery today was breathtaking and from some who have been to this part of Europe before, they say it’s going to get even better. From the window in my room tonight, I can see the city below with all it’s wonderful old architecture - I can hear church bells ringing – there’s history here too but we are too tired to find out more about it. Not many take advantage of walking around after supper. We don’t have a day off again until next week so then we will take advantage of touring.

Another perfect cycling day…….sunshine and more sunshine.
